When the co-pilot allegedly stabbed him inside the cockpit.

The aircraft then plunged more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.

The Indian Pilot Who Saved 180 Lives On Flydubai Flight. CNN-News18

Captain Smit Machchhar was not always destined to become a pilot.

But on September 30, the Indian Flydubai captain found himself fighting to save the lives of everyone aboard Flight FZ1073 after he was allegedly attacked by his co-pilot.

But who is Captain Smit Machchhar?

Machchhar has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience.

He began his career with SpiceJet in 2011, later became a senior Boeing 737 commander and joined Flydubai as a direct-entry captain in 2022.

Before becoming a pilot, Machchhar briefly studied textile engineering before attending an aviation seminar that changed the course of his career. He eventually travelled to New Zealand for commercial pilot training.

His actions during the Flydubai emergency have drawn praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

This is the story of Captain Smit Machchhar — the Indian pilot at the centre of the Flydubai Flight FZ1073 emergency.
