While he valued a sattvic (pure) vegetarian diet for meditation.
He also consumed meat and fish, arguing that animal protein provided the energy and vigor required for strenuous activity and nation-building.

He preferred plain rice, arhar or masoor dal, and seasonal vegetables.
He was also an excellent cook who occasionally prepared non-vegetarian dishes.
